Nomnomnom 4 Posted May 29, 2013 So the plans for the build are to take the motor out and rebuild it with forgies and cams and a new clutch and I'm putting in a gt2871. It's a drift car so I'm needing to stiffen the car up so I'm going to put a cage in too. I'm new to this site so I'm not sure on how things are run around here but I'm just putting the build out there for peeps to see and comment if you want. Cheers guys ill be updating it as I go. OHN.050 2 Posted May 30, 2013 Should be a fun car =)
Mxrulez731 0 Posted May 30, 2013 Looking good, should be an excellent base to start with.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted May 30, 2013 (edited) I should probably provide a back story to this whole thing... So maybe 4 or 5 years ago I bought a Mitsubishi starion for the purpose of turning it into a drift car. Basically it's been sitting in the shed stripped down since then. A couple of months ago I decided to finally do something, so I took out a loan and bought the s14 and I've been working pretty hard on it since. Nomnomnom 4 Posted May 31, 2013 Oh yeah... Here's a few pics of the mad clutch I'm using
Nomnomnom 4 Posted June 3, 2013 Just put in a turbosmart Vee port pro and a GKtech eccentric throttle wheel. And I've got a short vid of the bov too.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted June 8, 2013 Front wheels fitted Heading out to Sydney Motorsport Park tonight for skid pan. Anyone else coming?
Mase 1 Posted June 8, 2013 I'd say you'll munch your front right guard if you leave it like that.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted June 9, 2013 Nah I had no problems with the guard the fit is pretty nice. Also, the coilovers have very little travel
Nomnomnom 4 Posted June 19, 2013 Woo I pulled out the motor and gearbox on the weekend. Discovered that my "cracked manifold" was actually a misconception. It turned out to be that the turbo was only held on with 1 nut... So now the motor is stripped and ready to be sent for machining Also, I just picked up my 4-point cage from AGI. Looks epic and top quality.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Agi rollcages, peakhurst. Roll cage sourced through Australian Racing Technologies (ART) cause dan is a mad kent. Cage loaded into trailer Edited October 24, 2013 by Nomnomnom
SRS13 9 Posted July 9, 2013 Good stuff mate, what are the plans for the engine and turbo etc?
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 10, 2013 I've got a bunch of stuff at home ready to go in. The head is just getting a clean up and bc springs, retainers, collets and 272 duration cams, solid tomei lifters, rocker stoppers, new rockers and shims, new adjustable bc cam gears and a new timing kit. The block is having cylinders bored 0.5mm oversize in the next couple of weeks and probably have the main tunnel honed because of the main studs and head studs also. Ross racing pistons and rings, spool rods, acl race series bearings. Larger sump and I'm probably gonna make a power steering pulley soon. Also there's an Exedy hyper series ceramic brass button 6 puck clutch with billet flywheel and pressure plate and new arp flywheel bolts. I'm giving the cheapy slide ind. gt2871 a go cause it's cheap as f**k $999 for turbo and manifold. Turbosmart actuator and boost controller and custom side exit planned choo choo! SRS13 9 Posted July 10, 2013 Nice build! Get a decent head gasket and if you can the mazworx head studs. They are very big cams for that turbo!! Have you bought them yet or do you already have them?
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 10, 2013 I already have the cams. The turbo is cheap enough so meh... I already have arp studs and a cometic gasket too
Red_Gem 15 Posted July 10, 2013 Have you checked out the kando thread? Cheaper and I would be willing to bet better quality. Proven results. 2871 is average at the best of times
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 10, 2013 No I haven't yet! Might check it out. Um but yeah might as well use this turbo till I want moar powa haha or more seriousness. Oh yeah... I also fitted the cage on the weekend!! Massivelly overkill on the welds but better than not enough. And I fitted some GKtech handbrake extenders so ill see how they go. I have plans to rip the diff out and shove some shims in so skids are temporarily available. Till I can afford a 2 way. Any suggestions on a good 2 way guys and gals? Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 13, 2013 Yesterday after work I sandblasted the rocker cover with plans to paint it. So I bought some black wrinkle paint ftw! I e still gotta wait a day or so because of the weather till I can bake it.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 14, 2013 Here's the finished product, minus paint removal off lettering, and a couple of close ups.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 15, 2013 So after work tomorrow I'm probably going to machine up a new bracket for my turbosmart wastegate actuator, or just make a sheet stainless one (will decide in the moment). The turbo was really cheap so I don't really trust the actuator that came with it for reliable boost management, plus the turbosmart actuator has a base rate of 14psi and I like to go brand for brand when parts need to interact with each other for proper function. So the eboost street should be perfect enough. So yeah. Ill probably put up some photos about that stuff soon.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 16, 2013 Ok I didn't end up doing an actuator bracket, but I started machining up a torque plate as I would like to drop off the block for boring this or next weekend. It's made of 50mm mild steel. So far I've just machined 3 sides around it, so there's still a way to go. So that's where I'm at at the moment.
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 17, 2013 Machining the torque plate
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 18, 2013 Here's the torque plate all finished! Still gotta make some spacers for the nuts but ill do that this afternoon. Gonna assemble the plate onto the block tonight and then tomorrow ill take everything to the engine builder for machining. happy happy days
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 20, 2013 Ok small update guys I assembled the torque plate onto the block last night and got everything ready to drop off today to Harris engines. I noticed that the middle two head studs are higher than the rest? Is that normal? And so today I dropped off the block, head, crank, flywheel, pressure plate, bearings, main studs etc. And some pics. Cosmetic gasket Studs installed Torque plate installed Main studs installed Boot full of goodies in the Hyundai And a pic of the cage installed
Royzie 0 Posted July 20, 2013 Cage is cool was checking out their facebook page. What was the pricing like?
Nomnomnom 4 Posted July 20, 2013 hey yeah pricing isnt too bad considering theyre aus built and sydney based. i just wanted something basic that would allow me to go crazy without a fear of getting crushed if i roll it.And stiffen the car up a little. i paid about $750 for the 4 point with cross bar and harness bar, i think its about $500 odd for the basic one though. And its cams aproved too. Adam Gotch at AGI registers your VIN with cams with that cage.
