S13 Silvia Race Car. 2015 season finished.

Recommended Posts

I love how you can (or I can at least) just pin it from like turn 3 all the way down to the horseshoe. might not be able to do that with more than 200kw but I was having a blast ripping through there on street tyres.

The one I cant figure out is the first turn/kink and turn 2. any tips?

awesome, now i have a base car i can relate to (considering your car is still fairly simple in mods), to get closer to that 1:05 time i want.

i think your racing line is on point, looks similar to mine but few seconds faster LOL.

Slick tyres sure do look more fun to drive on then semis though, they can hold out much longer at maximum attack lol.

how did you find your aero package at Wakefield?

Great time man. The car looks very well set-up and settled. That was a nice clean lap! No doubt given better 'time attack' conditions and more track time, you would improve on that time.

Thanks guys. Aero wise the car was fine. Obviously doesnt have anywhere near the downforce of some of the time attack cars, probably doesnt make too much difference at a low speed track like wakefield though.

I was pretty happy with how the car handled the bumps and kerbs. I didnt make any setup changes at all over the weekend, ran it exactly how it was last round at lakeside.

I'd say with better weather and a bit more practice there would be another second in it.

Had a bit of an interest race meeting last weekend. Started out with a 27 car field which was pretty good. Did a new PB in qualifying by almost a second. Finished 3rd in class in race 1. Had a pretty interesting first lap in race 2, before I got taken out and bent my front ball joint.

Luckily I had a spare at home and had the car fixed for day 2, didn't really make much progress in the races though. Ended up 7th in class for the weekend and lost the lead in the championship.

So busy! Was that hit from the ute next to you getting sideways or from behind? How often do you rub panels requiring fixing like that or with the evo at Wakefield etc?

Was from the ute beside me. He just didn't see me apparently, sounds like he was sideways, but recons he wasn't...

I think that's the 3rd time I've had contact in the last 3yrs, just happened to be 2 rounds in a row.

Couple of photos and video from my race meeting on the weekend.

Set a new PB in quallifying, then reset it 3 laps in a row in Race 1, being chased by a Porsche cup car. Down to a 55.1 now.

Had the power steering high pressure hose fail in race 2, which caused a few issues including a little bit of a fire...

Started from 13th in race 3, made it back to 5th.

Also made a few mods lately, Modified FLCA and added some ducting and a vent for cooling.

Top vids. Too many fires man!

Are you running a power steering cooler? What size, brand front and rear guards.

I wasn't running a PS cooler. I've bought one to go in now. The braided high pressure line I had split, it might've been crushed at some stage by the look of it. The fire boiled the clutch fluid as well. I couldn't work out why the clutch went to the floor when I came into the pits, I didn't realize it had been on fire, I assumed it was just smoking...

I've got an S15 rack and PS pump to replace my leaky old crap. Newer parts and a cooler should solve the issues. I assume running the pump dry for a bit has damaged it even more, it worked for one race sunday but spewed all of the fluid out at the start of the second race, so I ended up doing the race with no PS at all...

Just Dmax style +40mm front guards and metal rear guards.

Ok thanks.

In in the process of putting in a power steer cooler and trying to work out what size is ok to use. I think any size should be ok for power steer fluid.

What size did you get?

Agree, after an incident like that, id replacing everything!

I ended up with one of these. They have ones half that size too, but I thought I might as well go all out. It probably wont get a heap of airflow so bigger should be better.

My pump has been noisy for a while and the rack has been dripping fluid, replacing 25yr old stuff with 15yr old... I was pretty lucky to get it fixed on the weekend, one of the guys we race with has a hose fitting business, so he knocked me up a proper rubber hose with swagged ends.

Also found out my TPS died before the last race. It was super hard to start, idling at 2000rpm and sounded weird on deceleration. It was reading 100% the whole time... Didn't seem to effect anything else too much though.

I got the smaller version of that! But its too small so wont be using it. Will see how it goes.

When its a race car things will need regular maintenance that on a road car you mightnt do as often. Its best to give parts a use by date and replace when needed.

Well the season is over. Ended up 2nd in class for the year. Only had 2 DNFs all season from 25 races, one from contact and one from a power steering failure.

We've had 2 rounds at QR since I updated this thread.

The August round was pretty uneventful except for the 2nd race of the weekend when it hammered down rain 5 mins before our race started. Most people ended up going out on slicks which was pretty eventful. I managed to stay on the track but it was interesting with the car randomly aquaplaning a couple of meters either way whenever it felt like it. Also had intercooler pipes split on pop off in 2 sessions which didn't help.

The last round went a bit better for me. Had no major issues all weekend. The car ran pretty well. I was using the set of tyres I've used all season so was probably 2 seconds off the pace.

Had a couple of epic races with 3-4 cars. Especially race 2. If you're going to watch any of the vid, race 2 starts at 1min.

Thought it was time for a bit of an update. My wife had our first child in mid November so I'm been struggling a bit to find time for the car since then. Still got a bit done over our summer break and have had a couple of race meetings already this season.

Got a new garage built just before xmas and installed a hoist, best thing I ever got, makes working on the car soooo much easier.

Made a new triangulated strut brace to replace the generic one I had. Also stitch welded as much of the front part of the car as I could get to. Added strengthening plates between the firewall and strut brace to reduce flex too.

Also installed the Winwood BSL6 calipers from DEF and brackets from 2Fass240us. Couldn't believe how much stiffer it makes the pedal feel after using 20yr old R33 calipers. The pedal moves half as much as it did before, once pressure builds it's solid.

Have had 2 race meetings as well this year. Was the fastest car at the first one but had a wideband sensor fail in one race so the ECU went into limp mode. Went from last to 1st in the final race of the weekend. Video below.

To be fair I had a margin of a sec or so over the next fastest car so it was fairly easy.

Second meeting of the season I had the 2nd fastest car, set a new PB, but had a couple of small car issues including a blocked pre lift pump filter...

Video including new PB

Photos from both meetings

I hear about that so often with foam. I'm going to have a go at fabbing custom tank with baffles and trap doors.

Havent updated this for a while.

Lost all the coolant and overheated the motor mid 2016, rebuilt the motor over the rest of the year. Had a couple of meetings so far this year.

This place is obviously dead now.

If you want to keep up with what is happening I have a FB group now instead... https://www.facebook.com/SamCollinsMotorsport/
