DIY pre workout drinks/gels

Recommended Posts

I've been taking my usual protein shake with a hit of dextrose monohydrate, creatine monohydrate and vitamin supps 30 mins beforehand.

Usually does the trick for me as the dextrose gives me enough of a kick start (6am weights session usually).

Wondering what everyone else is doing out there for their pre workout energy supplimentation?

Anyone here ever go down the homebrew path?

Thinking of more cost effective solutions.

Might adjust my recipe with the addition of taurine...

Yeah I have heard that too, but to be more precise the fructose in the apple provides more sustained energy for a longer period comparatively, where coffee does not as it holds pretty much zero caloric value (unless you have loads of sugar with your morning brew) but does create the immediate sensation of alertness.

look into the key ingredients in the preworkout supps. the big ones are beta alanine, 1,3 - DIMETHYLAMYLAMINE (DMAA) -

and geranium extract

Thanks for the reply Marco, that's what I have been pretty much doing, I am adding ingredients a bit at a time at the moment to adjust as I need.

So far I have pieced together (per serving)

Taurine - 1 tsp

Creatine Mono - 1 tsp

Glucose - 1 Tblsp

Whey isolate - 2 Tblsp

which is doing fine for pre and post (post I add some electrolyte or "ultra muscle ease")

Going to see if I can get any BCAA's in powder form somewhere and will be probably adding maybe Arginine and Carnitine next for muscle protien synthesis.

I have used Jack3D, Mesomorph, Bulk Nutrients and 1MR.

The reason why I have used them is simply for the benefits 'I think' they give.

  • Increased awareness and focus (all of them)
  • Perceived increase in strength (Mesomorph, BN and 1MR)
  • Increase in energy (Jack3D, Mesomorph, BN)
  • Increased 'pump' (Jack3D, BN, Mesomorph)
  • Increased endurance

I don't get these feelings when not using the powders!

Do I need to feel this way before I train? No. I do train without the powders on occasion as I don't want to become reliant upon them.

Do I want to feel this way before I train? Yes. Hence I use the powders.

You are happy to pay all that money for was the mostly a giant placebo?

If you need these to give you energy, endurance etc. then you need to look at what your diet is lacking. Just take baking soda and tell yourself it's the over priced powder!

Would i put this shit in my body? Hell no.

WTF is with people wanting a "pump", i always thought it was something you did AFTER the gym, not what you got during it.

Yeah I pretty much use these to give me a good boost for my 5am workouts due to the lack of usable carbs in my system that time in the morning, otherwise if im doing an arvo session its just post wo protein and an isotonic, however if i am training for an extended period, say on the weekend, I would be inclined to supplement mid way through.

Anyhow back on topic, anyone else have a home brew mix?

Even non bulk powder mixes like natural blended fruit concoctions etc... open to all suggestions.

I expected a response like that and to be honest I have no intentions of getting into a debate on this.

I completely understand the dietary situation and am working on that but for now I will do and use what I believe works for me.

Yep, don't usually have much time during the week, train then go straight to work.

Occasionaly do get an afternoon session in but its crowded by that time and less enjoyable.

I take I scoop of Mesomorph + GNC RapidDrive BCAA5000 pre workout (like 10mins pre) and gives me a good buzz.

Keeps me going for 1-2 hours, with no sleepy times after.

Post workout I take 1 scoop GNC Nitro+ (protein).

Pre workout, like 30mins, I take N-Acetyl Carnitine. And around about lunch I take some other Carnitine that's not physically stimulating.

Been doing this for about 4 months, gone from 94kg to 85kg, and built proper muscles. I'm 193cm's. Not that I was every fat, just slightly out of shape coz since I got a full-time desk job.

PS, been doing gym shit for like... 10 years, this is probs best combination I found.

Ultimate goal = be able to do all that ^ pre work... but I CAN'T f**kN GET THE ENERGY to do it in the morning pre work (leave 730am for work)

Tranning startes between 630pm and 7pm, I got home around 6pm from work. And I finish all-up and about to shower around 8pm.

...whole day's gone...
