S15 Varietta SpecRB25DET ;)

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

well, the title says it all, doesn't it :)

I owned a Skyline R34 GTT, which sadly in a garage fire burned down. I didn't want another GTT and the GTR I think is too expensive and I always liked the S15 (altough I already owned a s14 kouki^^).

But just to pose a bit more, the varietta seemed fine (if the weather in Germany pays off...) and the RB still was in good shape.

So that quite mad idea popped into my mind :teehee:

Since everything is going to be changed anyway, I searched for a cheap Varietta, nothing special and this one popped up:

It's a 2000 model with around 80.000km on the clock, SR20DE A/T. You can sense why it was cheap^^ Bonestock and those rims are killing everything :hammer: 19 inch chromes on a stock s15... maaan

Also the rear left window doesnt go down when dropping the roof... maybe motor killed or anything electrical.

More about the chassis later... now for the engine:

I gave it to a local tuning company (more specific a guy who owns a workshop) and he is just the SR and RB chief himself. I dont think my RB could be in better hands (atleast here in germany) that guy told me anything about the engines and I had no idea what he was talking about ;) You should see his workshop. I've never seen so much SR, RB, CA engine blocks lying around ...

Since the RB is going to put out about 500+ hp, I though I better let it be done by somebody who knows shit ;)

Some pictures from the build so far:

prepping the valves (all of them)

He also did a pressure check on all valves after the preparation and crankshaft got a new collar, since that's apparantly a fault on the NEO engine.

Speclist engine (so far)

- Twinscroll BorgWarner S200SX turbo

- ZEX (thats the tuner) Selfmade twinscroll manifold

- Greddy-Style intake plenum

- ZEX selfmade fuelrail

- Bosch EV14 668ccm injectors

- Bosch 044 fuel pump

- new wiring RB25DET matching S15

- oilcooler 25 rows

- powersteering cooler 9 rows

- knocksensor KS3 ZEX

- aluminium pully kit

- Z33 ZEX selfmade AFM

- mapping ZEX

- Nistune

- few things like N1 waterpump, new camshaftsensor, generator fixed, new gasket set, etc. things that were harmed during the fire

- Some purple paint ;) Parts of the engine are gonna be sprayed in HKS-style purple, rest of it will be black, hope its gonna look dope

More parts arriving/arrived:

- TEIN StreetAdvance

- Nismo lightened flywheel RB25

Todo:

- cleaning engine bay + spraying in matte black or gray

- getting SpecR diff from somewhere cancelled, can just use the diff from my R34 since I'm gonna swap the whole axle

- M/T swap, pedals and stuff for conversion

- stiffening up the chassis, I thought about some struts and stuff from ultraracing, cauz the convertible really needs a stiffer chassis when being attacked by 500+ HP

- fixing the small window rear left sort of done

- wheels obviously. I got the Rotas left from my Skyline, maybe I use those can't! They don't fit under the S15. I'll go concaves I guess

- finally choosing a bodykit... thinking about the D1-GP from behrman with a lot of canards and stuff. Thoughts?

or maybe I go rocketbunny

RocketBunny-GT86.jpg

Nope, nope. I'll go vertex ridge front with aero rear pods and diffusors and stuff. Think it'll look quite good

- proper taillights, cleaning the headlamps

- RECARO speeds

- retrim the whole interior, thought of a black/white/carbon mixture with stitches and shit

- rear seats out of it, putting in some struts (the Ultraracing struts I already ordered)

- repaint whole car (preferably in BMW frozen matte blue, but not decided yet)

- nismo speedo

- working out the height of the RB25, since this is a problem with the stock engine mounts... maybe I go for a powerdome on the hood :wheelchair:

- resized propshaft

I'm sure I missed out something^^ And if anyone can provide anything from the "Todo" part, feel free to contact me.

For now the car is under a blanket at my home, as soon as the workshop I can go into, is free, the stripping starts :hypo:

If there are any questions go ahead or you want more pictures, ask. Aaaand sorry for my english. I'm from ze Germany ;)

Ive seen a fair few RB25's in S15's with stock bonnets so Im pretty sure its doable!

Glad to see you are doing this to a Varietta, they dont get much love because they are all NA from factory.

Hows the import scene in Germany? I know you guys got the 200sx with a CA18DET but in terms of S13, S14, S15 etc. Are they popular?

Good luck with the build!

Awesome project, providing they survived the fire, and assuming as the wheels an motor survived, should be fine?, You can swap your R34 diff and half shafts into your S15, they go in just like replacement's but are bigger (stronger) although you will also need the change your handbrake cables etc aswell, but it all bolts in, Unsure if you will have clearance (height) probs with the R34 cross member (subframe) check out either these guys : http://www.mckinneym...5+and+RB26+Swap , or try to source an R32 Skyline cross member and engine mounts, remember to get the engine mount plates off the block aswell

@s13k's:

Yeah the S13 and S14 are quite common over here, since they were officially available, being LHD. The S15 never was, so its all import and quite rare. Same with the skylines. But people like me don't really care about that and drive the RHD on the right lane :)

The import scene is still quite small compared to the scene of VWs, BMWs and Mercs, obviously, and when you see a jap car its probably a riced out honda^^ But it gets better, some really awesome cars are already driving round here from everything like a Pulsar up to a 1000hp street driven supra :)

@350stato:

Yeah I thought about the R34 diff aswell. It's still good, is it plug and pray into the s15? Friend of mine also told me about the S14 diff instead of a specR. Since I've got the A/T, I'll have to swap the whole diff anyway.

As far as I know, The S14 and S15 share the same diff, Yes all of the R34 gear just bolt's straight in, the thing you will need to change is the handbrake set-up, but everything from your R34 will swap over, I swapped all of mine from an R33, you can keep your s15 rear knuckles and sub-frame, diff and half shaft go in just like a replacment, no modding, drilling, cutting required

Sounds a lot easier than it probably will be ;)

But I've seen your build thread. Looks like you know your shit :)

I'm still waiting for the garage to be clear so I can finally staaaaart :/

Minor update from my engine specialist. No change to the car itself since the garage is still not ready !!!

Taking the RB for a bath ;)

Small fixes on the block itself

And some parts came back from the painting!

Color came out better than I expected! Really eager to see what it looks like in the engine bay!

Finally! After months of not doing shit I managed to find a place to park the car and get some modifications done to it ;)

Also there has been some progress on the engine:

IMG-20140730-WA0007.jpg

Cosworth power ;)

IMG-20140730-WA0013.jpg

Twinscroll manifold

Further progress, color coming out nicely I think

IMG-20140825-WA0007.jpg

IMG-20140825-WA0008.jpg

Really eager to hear those :D

IMG-20140825-WA0011.jpg

I've also stripped the interior a lot, needs some cleaning. Got no pictures atm but I will deliver.

Got 2 RECARO Seats and some seat rails. Seats will be covered in leather and some nice stitches, but that will take a few weeks from now.

Next step then is to get in the TEIN.

Lookin for some cheap wheels while the car is built, since my Rotas from the skyline wont fit under the car :/

When the car is done and widened I'll go for concave concepts. But since I don't know the final width and wheel dimensions I'm not going to buy them for now.

I cannot recommend the McKinney kits highly enough for these conversions - Don't need to modify anything, sit lower and further back. Check out "rawbrokerage" in the states

Pretty much finished same conversion in my S15. Let me know if u need any help ;)http://hardtuned.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=491953&st=240

I know man, I'm constantly following your Thread (subscribed) and got a lot of ideas from there. Really like your car and build!

@OHN.050:

I've heard a lot about those kits. But don't you need like a special subframe for it? Or are they for use with the S15 stock subframe?

I was going to try my R34 subframe.

@crowblade - They bolt onto the standard cross member / subframe. I used one for my S13. Just drilled 2 holes into the cross and was all sweet.

You can use this style of engine mounts designed for SR crossmembers on 33/34 subframes. Lowers the motor drastically.

I use solid alloy mounts =) And I stand corrected -I just tried to find the link on RB - Nothing for 15.

I think I don't get what you mean?

I was trying to use my R34 subframe, so its all RB in my case. RB engine on RB frame. Why do I need SR subframe?

You used R32 subframe didn't you? As far as I could tell from you thread the engine sits quite low?

@OHN.050: So no RB swap kit into S15 from those guys?

I used r32 everything but can be hard to find.

I was just saying that those poly mounts are designed for sr20 brackets but work well on r33/34 subframes.

Have a look at the picture of my mates setup you'll see what I mean

ahhh, I overread the "designed for" but used on R34 :D

Properly reading might help sometimes ^^

Okay, where do I get those? Just in case I'll ever gonna need them?

looks good, however I wouldn't use that balancer.. it's asking to smash oil pumps.. I would stick with a brand new OEM balancer OR a ATI one.
