Hi all Done some searching on here and cant seem to find any info on weather or not you can put a Double row timing chain into an SR20DET or not ?, if not that's fine and ill just go grab a standard chain but would just like to know as that is my next step Any help is very much appreciated, cheers
  2. Hi All, I will be as descriptive as possible. I have been installing a new timing chain tensioner. Before I removed anything I rotated the engine to TDC (second mark in from the left). I counted the pins between the marks on the IN and EX sprockets and it was 20 (as per the manual). I then ziptied the chain to the sprockets and removed the tensioner. I installed the new tensioner, however, it did not release straight away, and I have read that by rotating the crank it will release, however, I had to rotate it to a point where I needed to remove the zip ties. I kept rotating and heard a chink sound and the tensioner had released. I rotated the crank back round to TDC (it revolved freely with no issues), counted the pins between the dots and it had reduced to 19. The EX dot also was no longer in the centre of a pin link and was in the centre of a roller link. The IN mark was still in the centre of a pin link. I then had a look at the CAS and the painted mark was not aligned with the mark on the housing and was a little more towards the rear of the car. I concluded that when the tensioner took up tension it must of created a wave in the chain allowing the EX cam to rotate a single tooth anticlockwise. With the engine a TDC, and the chain ziptied to the IN sprocket I was able to lift the chain off the EX sprocket just enough to rotate the cam a single tooth so that there was 20 pins between the alignment dots. It also moved the painted mark on the CAS to align with the mark in the housing. The engine still freely rotates and when I align the engine to TDC, it all looks like pictures, and diagrams I have found. I know this probably has come up many times, however, I have done, heaps of internet searches and read through the EM portion of the manual on the timing setup and what I have seems to be correct, however, I took some photos and would like to get a second opinion from someone who has set the timing before.
