Fan noise after thick radiator install

02 December 2017 - 01:17 PM

Not sure if anyone else has noticed much more fan noise after installing a 52mm alloy radiator. I never used to notice any fan noise with the stock radiator. I think possibly the viscous clutch is getting to much heat as it is now physically closer to the radiator code, making it operate harder earlier. This happens even on cool days after 20 mins or so driving.

Engine is basically stock with Nismo thermostat and alloy china radiator (52mm triple core). Engine temps are fine (probably cooler than they should be for daily driving) and system has been bled.

I just want to know if this is a normal thing with an alloy rad replacement that I haven't seen mentioned before.

S15 rotors front and rear

26 November 2017 - 08:53 AM

Front rotors are 29.6mm (min 28, new 30)
Rear are 8.1mm (min 7, new 9)

Probably not going to ship these due to the weight. Can pickup in Epping or Bella Vista, or could be persuaded to drop off around or between said locations.

Make an offer, 6-pack of beer or equivalent cash will be looked at favourably.

Trolley Jacks

04 September 2017 - 04:28 PM

My 25 yo trolley jack has finally given up and leaked out its fluid. I am thinking about winning our and getting a light aluminium one to replace it. Do people rate the Arcan 1.8T from Costco? Any good alternatives?

Silvia + wet weather + cheap tyres = fun times

20 July 2016 - 09:21 AM

Wet weather in Sydney today is making for interesting driving. I usually don't daily the Silvia to work in wet weather, but I have a track day coming up and I am driving it more to get comfortable. So I generally drive like a granny in the wet because power, LSD and cheap tyres. So am I following a newish model Corolla around a roundabout about 25-30km in a 50km zone. The Corolla goes through neatly, I on the other hand have the rear end lose grip and take the roundabout full drift style (without hitting anything and making a clean exit, for which I am pretty happy).

I originally got the cheap tyres knowing they were pretty bad in the wet, but well behaved in the dry. Thinking I don't drive in the wet so it sounded like a good compromise. However these tyres are really bad in the wet and didn't get much better after the mold release coating wore off. Although it can be fun breaking traction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd when the boost comes on with a stock engine

I am happy with dry performance though, not massive amounts of grip but they lose grip progressively. I also want to do some drift or motorkhana days, and didn't want to turn expensive tyres into rubber particles. For track days I get to experience driving at the limit of the tyres grip, without that limit being too fast for what I am capable of at the moment.

Radiator replacement

04 July 2016 - 04:23 PM

Replacing my radiator with a larger alloy one. When I pulled out the old one I noticed a plastic tray underneath the radiator and AC condenser that is floating around (although it can't fall out, it just rattles around). It has 4 6mm holes that line up with holes in the chassis, and looks like it is meant to be held with plastic rivets. However no rivets, or remnants remain. Does anyone know if it should be held on that way, or is it meant to just sit there loose?
